Known to the Greeks as Poseidonia, to the Italic peoples as Paistom and Paitos, and to the Romans as Paestum, the city was located in the easternmost part of the Gulf of Salerno, known in antiquity as the Gulf of Poseidonia, about 10 km from the mouth of the Sele River, the ancient Silaros. It was one of the richest and most prosperous Greek colonies of southern Italy along the western coast of the Tyrrhenian Sea.
